Pretty big event on the plains...
So it’s not every day you get to work for the Canadian Press. And less so that you get to work for the CFL.
Once in a blue moon, I get to do work for the Canadian Press. Once in a different blue moon, the Grey Cup is hosted here in Regina, Saskatchewan. And every so often, those stars align. Having worked for the Canadian Press in 2021, I was contacted by the CP stating that they would be needing a few photographers for the Grey Cup events in the week leading up to the big game and would I be interested? Well how often does an opportunity like this come along?
I was tasked, then, with being one of the photographers to attend the arrival of the grey cup at 15 Wing, Moose Jaw where it was taxied in by snow bird. You could hardly think of a more Canadian sight.
Among dignitaries, reporters of all stripes and military personnel, the CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie spoke to a hushed but excited crowd.
The following Friday I was then invited to photograph the “State of the League” events, wherein Commissioner Ambrosie addressed members of the media, and then later fans of the league. I have never been the sort to wear a watermelon on my head, nor do I think I ever will be, but it was cool to see so many impassioned fans having the experience of a lifetime!
